Who are we?
Powys Domestic Abuse Forum is a multi-agency partnership of statutory and voluntary organisations that are committed to reducing the incidence of domestic abuse and includes representatives from Powys County Council, Powys Local Health Board, Police, Probation, Women’s Aid, PDAC and Victim Support Powys.Underpinning the work of PDAF are 2 important pieces of legislation: The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and more recently The Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Act 2004. The latter provides increased legal protection for women and children/young people – which will enable more victims to stay in their own homes and to feel safe.
The road ahead
The Forum has produced an action plan for the next 3 years and aims to
- Promote the message that domestic abuse is not acceptable
-
Encourage reporting of domestic abuse and reduce repeat victimisation
- Enhance the confidence of victims and increase their access to services and support available to them
- Reduce acceptance by children and young people of domestic abuse
- Quantify the true cost of domestic abuse – in both human and financial terms
- Hold perpetrators accountable for their behaviour
In response to the All Wales National Strategy: Tackling Domestic Abuse, the Powys Domestic Abuse Forum (PDAF) has produced a variety of promotional materials to raise awareness of help available to victims of domestic abuse. These include information cards, key rings, bookmarks and post-it notes with details of the Welsh Domestic | Abuse Helpline and organisations that offer support and advice. PDAF also has a website dedicated to children and young people – Not Your Fault and has distributed mouse mats and wristbands to schools in Powys. PDAF is committed to challenging the perception that domestic abuse is acceptable.
There is no excuse for acts of abuse and the only person responsible for this behaviour is the perpetrator. During November and December, PDAF distributed 15,000 beer mats to pubs throughout Powys, funded by the Powys Community Safety Partnership, to promote the message that domestic abuse is unacceptable behaviour, whether drunk or sober.
